During your first visit
Your first visit offers Dr. Devin DeGreif a chance to learn more about your medical history, your symptoms and your story in order to develop an individualized treatment plan that will reduce your pain or symptoms and maximize your health and function.
Dr. Devin will perform a thorough examination to check for musculoskeletal, neuromuscular or movement issues that will need to be addressed during treatment. Depending on the issues discussed during the initial interview, your examination may include:
- Assessment of the structure and alignment of the spine, pelvis and tailbone/coccyx
- Functional movement assessment
- Orthopedic assessment
- If pelvic floor related or concern for involvement of pelvic floor:
- External examination of pelvic floor and pelvic girdle muscles, ligaments and soft tissues
- Myofascial assessment of abdominal and pelvic muscles to identify possible adhesions and/or trigger points
- If indicated, internal evaluation of pelvic floor muscle strength and endurance, as well as tissue quality, sensation and the presence of pain or muscle spasm
Once the physical examination is complete, Dr. Devin will sit down with you to discuss her findings and address any concerns you may have. She will also let you know what the suggested treatment plan includes and how often you should visit with her in order to address your impairments. During the consultation, Dr. Devin will help ease your mind regarding worries, concerns or questions you may have.
Pelvic Health Treatment
Your treatment program will vary depending on your initial assessment and what we need to prioritize for improvement. Some things that might be included:
Preparing for your Appointments
Before you come to each appointment, it would be helpful if you could dedicate some time writing down any symptoms you are experiencing, whether you can pinpoint any triggers, such as specific postures or activities. Write down any questions you might have as well. Our goal is to develop an individualized treatment plan for you.
At Well Balanced we consider patient education and communication essential to the healing process. You will find that, from your first visit, the more willing you are to discuss, learn and engage in Physical Therapy the faster you will see results.
With thorough patient education, you can expect faster and longer lasting results. Understanding what’s going in your body will help you live a healthier, fuller life – if you better understand what’s causing your pelvic dysfunction you can also learn strategies to reduce it, no matter how long you have been living with pelvic floor dysfunction or pain.
This interaction doesn’t end with your first visit. In fact, it’s important that the lines of communication remain open during the whole treatment process. Chances are you will have questions as you progress and improve. Part of your follow-up visits with Dr. Devin will be spent addressing these questions, as well as easing any concerns you might have. Communicating with your doctor not only helps you, but it also helps her understand how your body is responding to treatment and whether things need to be adjusted to provide you with the best care possible.
